In recent years, especially due to globalization, the demand for English has grown considerably as good communication skills in English have a direct bearing on the employability of graduates. With the inclusion of English in the curricula of all disciplines, there has been a significant increase in the demand for competent English teachers. Further, a holistic education calls for a rigorous training in the disciplines of liberal arts like literature. Of late, a rethinking about the discipline of English Studies and a plethora of theories have led to the restructuring of the curriculum rendering the postgraduate programme in English studies intellectually stimulating.

Eligibility
Graduates who have secured 40% in the aggregate of all subjects and 50% marks in the cognate subject in the qualifying University examinations are eligible to apply. Candidates with B.A, B.Sc., or B.Com Degree are eligible to apply provided they have scored 55% in the language concerned in the degree course
Admission Procedure
Admission to the course is decided by the marks obtained in the qualifying examination, followed by personal interview.
